Book 3, Chapter 335: Destroy The Formation
The commander’s face was covered by a metal mask, so Chen Chuan couldn’t see his expression, but his eyes were focused on him.Once Chen Chuan jumped into the air, the commander brought his spear up and pointed it in the direction where Chen Chuan was going to land. To his right, his aide-de-camp—now on a new horse—brought his spear up as well.
The two spears were positioned next to each other and practically sealed off Chen Chuan’s path forward. But that wasn’t all. The tips of the two spears were shining with a faint light.
Even though Chen Chuan’s attack had been sudden and caught them off guard, there was a great distance between them. To people like them, that was enough time to get ready and accumulate power.
They believed that if they worked together, even enemies at the same level as they were couldn’t break through their blockade and escape from their coordinated attacks.
It was fine if the other warriors and soldiers died from Chen Chuan’s attacks. As long as the commander and aide-de-camp were around, they could recruit and deploy new soldiers.
Even ten royally appointed warriors couldn’t compare to them. After killing Chen Chuan, their chances of breaching the gap would increase. Such a tradeoff was worth it in their eyes.
But just when they pushed their spears forward, their instincts screamed at them about danger. Goosebumps broke out on their skin, since that feeling... came from the back.
When Chen Bitong went down, he didn’t just wait by the side. Instead, he took a huge detour and went to the back of the group. Due to his ample experience and the unique nature of his refined force, no one noticed him.
The moment Chen Chuan attacked, his chance arrived, and he struck without hesitation.
The commander hadn’t expected anyone to rush down the mountain, much less that the enemy would come from the tightly defended rear.
At that moment, everyone, including the commander and the aide-de-camp, were focused on the front and had no way to defend against attacks from the rear.
However, warriors who were only a step away from reaching the next limit could remain calm even in the face of such a sudden attack. The commander and aide-de-camp quickly thought of a way to get out of the situation.
Their horses sensed their urgency and moved forward, while the commander and aide-de-camp squeezed out all their remaining strength to force blood essence out of their hearts in order to face what they believed was going to be a powerful attack.
Two palms struck their bodies, and they trembled.
Anger as well as shock appeared in their eyes, because the two attacks didn’t have any weight to them. It felt like a bubble had touched them.
Chen Bitong remained in the distance instead of charging over. The two palm strikes had been delivered remotely.
Even though he was several kilometers away from the gap, he could teleport and dodge attacks with its help. But the further away he was from the gap, the more time it would take to get inside and move out, which meant that it was practically useless in fights against others at his level.
He exploited that very trait to travel a longer distance and execute those attacks. Since his mental energy and physical energy reached the commander and aide-de-camp first, they felt threatened and reacted so violently.
His use of the slow teleportation led to amazing results. After the two palm strikes, he left behind an afterimage. Meanwhile, the real Chen Bitong appeared behind the commander and aide-de-camp to push his palms forward.
Bam! Bam!
His hands struck their bodies.
The commander and aide-de-camp had never expected them to blatantly use a feint during such a crucial moment. They also hadn’t dared to consider the possibility that the enemy wasn’t using his full strength, which led to them making a mistake while adjusting their positions.
When the real attack came, they could not adjust again. As a powerful refined force charged into their bodies, their spines and joints exploded.
The power of the Void String Force rampaged in their bodies like a wave of destruction, and the shining light at the tips of their spears dispersed. They couldn’t even gather their refined force anymore.
At that moment, Chen Chuan’s saber finally swung down.
The blade flashed.
Chen Chuan passed by the commander. Once he was dozens of meters away, his feet finally landed on the ground. He was in the position of when he had delivered his slash.
Behind him, the commander remained frozen for a while before half of his head and chest slid down and crashed on the ground.
At the same time, the flag signifying the commander broke and fell. The impact caused a huge cloud of dust to fly into the air.
Chen Chuan lowered his saber and straightened his back.
He had only wanted to behead the commander, but after remembering that these people were different and had transformed into different creatures, he was worried that the commander could find a way to reconnect his head or change to another body. He decided to cut his brain vertically and use refined force to destroy his brain tissue.
As for the aide-de-camp, Chen Bitong hit him with a dozen punches. Even if the purpose of the Void String Force wasn’t to kill, the aide-de-camp couldn’t bear the powerful impact.
When Chen Bitong delivered the final punch to the back of the aide-de-camp’s head, the man’s eyeballs exploded with a loud pop, and his head tilted to the side. Even though his armor kept his body intact, it was reduced to a pulp.
Chen Chuan cast a glance at the rest of the camp. They had expected that they would only be able to kill the commander or the aide-de-camp at best. They were also likely to get injured in the process.
To their surprise, their teamwork was seamless, and they managed to kill the commander and aide-de-camp in an instant.
Originally, they had intended to retreat after securing their kill to avoid getting surrounded, but judging by the current situation, no one here could stop them. After all, the commander and aide-de-camp had died.
Some of the royally appointed warriors had lost their ability to fight during Chen Chuan’s charge, while the others were overcome by fear. These people were the pillars of the army. If they were killed, the normal soldiers wouldn’t be a threat anymore.
Chen Chuan turned to Chen Bitong to ask for his opinion. The older man shook his head at him.
Chen Chuan thought about it. Chen Bitong had more experience. If he believed that this wasn’t a good idea, he had to have a reason for it. Chen Chuan wasn’t going to push for it.
He didn’t hesitate and sheathed his saber before retreating to the gap.
When he passed by the commander’s corpse, he looked down and saw his sword. It had a black hilt and a crimson sheath with all sorts of beautiful patterns. It also had a tassel attached to a gemstone, so it was gorgeous. Chen Chuan picked the sword up with Frost King Saber while he was running past the commander.
As for Chen Bitong, he grabbed the collapsed flag and retreated to the gap with Chen Chuan.
Soon after they returned to the mountaintop, they heard loud cannonfire behind them. When they turned around, they saw that the cannonballs had landed where they had originally stood. At that moment, flames and smoke filled the area.
“Aren’t they worried about friendly fire?” Chen Chuan asked.
Chen Bitong shook his head. “I think they decided to do this because they learned about what had happened. If we had stayed there, they would have suffered even greater losses if they didn’t open fire.”
Chen Chuan nodded at that.
“Now that the commander and aide-de-camp are dead, they will be even more desperate. They’re likely to attack with everything they’ve got. We need to be ready for it,” Chen Bitong said.
“Okay,” Chen Chuan agreed. He took a moment to examine himself. He had been using Awakening Clarity for a long time, and quintessence had seeped into him, so his mind had become much stronger.
The intense fight before had also stimulated his mind, especially when he successfully killed the commander. His mind had gotten much stronger.
He felt like he could sense something, but not fully.
After some thinking, he asked, “Instructor Chen, is there a name for the technique to use the mind to draw power?”
“The texts from the old era have this to say, ‘with a spark of spiritual clarity, I know my true nature; with true awakening, I can cross the world and renew my fate.’ You can call it spirit sense.”
“Spirit sense, huh?”
Chen Chuan let out a long, deep breath.
They heard the sound of propellers and looked up. An airship was in the sky far in the distance.
Chen Bitong’s expression turned grim. “Move inside, Captain Chen.”
“Got it,” Chen Chuan said and retreated without hesitation.
Not even five minutes later, they heard loud explosions within the gap.
After that, more cannonballs whistled through the air and crashed down. The cannonfire from the base also reached the mountaintop.
More than twenty cannons were firing at the mountaintop.
Chen Chuan and Chen Bitong retreated to the edge of the gap leading to their own world. With just one more step, they could get out.
That wasn’t necessary, though. They were safe where they stood, because the cannonfire could only reach the middle section of the gap at most. It had no way of going further.
It seemed like the deaths of the commander and aide-de-camp had indeed caused an extreme reaction. The barrage lasted for a total of fifteen minutes.
Once it calmed down, the airship drew closer. The machineguns on it then started firing into the gap.
At the same time, a wave of White Plagues rushed up the mountain under the cover. They dashed into the gap like it was a competition.
