System Of The Undead

Chapter 118: First Encounter! Evolved Zombie!

Chapter 118: First Encounter! Evolved Zombie!

The fight of his life began; the desperate struggle that Jason found himself in.

The zombie had somehow climbed the wall like a fucking spider and descended on Jason from above.

He didn’t know how this was possible but it was happening, Jason managed to let out a shot that changed its landing trajectory and this allowed him to evade it.

The zombie landed in his previous location and Jason managed to let out a few more shots but there was something strange about this zombie, it was using its limb to protect its head.

Jason couldn’t get a clean shot and the zombie charged at him but it wasn’t in a linear manner.

It was hopping from wall to wall like a fucking monkey, and this made it even harder for Jason to hit his mark.

The limited space also limited the evasive manoeuvres he could make.

"Chronos! What the fuck is this!?"

[It is an unidentified zombie, I have no information regarding it for now.]

Chronos responded and this was a first, Jason tried to equip his assault rifle because that was what he needed right now.

He needed to overwhelm its defenses and this was his only choice to do that.

Jason fired a few of those shots but the zombie had already closed the distance and reached for his head; Jason managed to duck just in time.

He didn’t know the stats of the zombies because Chronos was in the dark as well.

[The fragment is interfering with my abilities to discern the type of zombie this is, including its stats.]

Chronos responded and this made sense, Jason knew there was no way he could fight this zombie in such a tight space but if he headed back, then he would have other things to worry about because the sewer water would slow him down.

"Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!" Jason was horrified, the zombie was vicious and Jason noticed that it didn’t magically hang on the wall like it was Spiderman.

It was its fingers, for some reason, they were strong enough to dig into the walls allowing it to move about like a spider.

There was no way that Jason could defeat it, he had to abandon the quest or risk losing his life.

The zombie charged at him once more but it ran right at him, this made it a lot easier for Jason to hit it due to its linear path and he let out a few shots but the zombie leaped up into the air.

"Does it have fucking intelligence!?" Jason questioned, he didn’t understand what was going on because the zombie clearly lured him into attacking.

Chronos had no idea what was happening either but there was no way that this zombie just got this fragment, it must have had it for a while.

The zombie came down and landed right on Jason, the force was enough to end him crashing into the ground but Jason didn’t allow it to pin him down, trying to use his pistol to land a shot right at his head but the zombie jumped back to avoid this point blank attack.

But there was a silver lining, the path he used to get here was free and Jason knew it was now or never, he took to his heels.

He ran his fastest without looking back even though he could hear the growling getting closer and closer, Jason placed his gun beneath his armpit and pointed it back.

He let loose, firing blindly as the bullets ricocheted off the walls but he got in a lucky shot and it nearly tore off one of the zombie’s legs.

This slowed it down significantly as it fell into the water.

Jason stopped for a moment to see if he had gotten the zombie but he had no plans of waiting for confirmation.

Jason kept running because he had no reason to stay here, this place was hell.

"Chronos, what the fuck did you get me into!? Are you trying to get me killed!?" Jason screamed.

Jason knew if he didn’t level up, he would be fucked because what kind of shit was this?

[I’m afraid I miscalculated how much of an impact a fragment would make.]

Chronos said and Jason was glad that he was running for his life, there was no way in hell he could win and he wasn’t about to try to play the hero.

"What’s that sound?" Jason asked, he heard splashing behind him and hoped to God it wasn’t this zombie but his prayers weren’t answered.

The zombie was coming at him, it leapt to the side of the wall, with its leg missing, but it didn’t matter much due to how it travelled.

Jason wasn’t sure what was going on but he knew that the threat it posed remained the same.

"Chronos! Where the fuck is the fragment located!?" Jason asked.

[It is located in its chest.]

Chronos responded but Jason knew this didn’t help him much, the zombie was self-aware enough to know that it had to protect its brain to survive.

This was no random zombie and he blamed the fragment for this.

"What happens if I take out the fucking fragment!?" Jason was desperate.

If he knew this was how things would be, he would have just returned to the community with the bag in hand.

[The zombie ceases to be, you won’t kill it but it loses its intelligence but this depends on how long it has merged with the fragment.]

Chronos responded and this was enough to tell Jason he had to give it a shot quite literally.

He needed to put a bullet right through that zombie’s chest but if it knew to protect its brain, wouldn’t that be the same with its chest?

Jason knew it wasn’t bulletproof and thanks to Chronos, he had something that Sam didn’t and that was information.

Jason stopped and turned around, he knew it was pointless running away and thanks to his skill, his accuracy was improved.

Jason took a deep breath and narrowed his sight on the zombie before letting loose a few shots but the bullets narrowly missed the zombie.

But he noticed that the zombie didn’t bother to protect its chest but maybe that was because he had missed his shots.

Jason knew he had a chance and he was going to do everything in his power to make sure this thing didn’t escape this place because there was no telling the kind of damage it could do.

If this zombie reached the community, tons of innocent would die and there was no telling if those he cared about would be among those casualties.

Jason got on one knee to steady himself despite the zombie charging towards him, he only had one shot. If he missed this shot, then it was all over due to the speed at which the zombie charged at him.

Jason’s breathing slowed and his focus peaked, he closed one of his eyes to narrow in on his target and a bullet escaped the nozzle of his gun.

Jason aimed for the head, forcing the zombie to use both its hands to protect it but another bullet followed a split second later at the chest.

The zombie was vulnerable, it couldn’t defend against it but that wasn’t the problem.

The zombie was about to take Jason’s head but that bullet was enough to send it crashing into the water. Jason couldn’t get out of the way in time and because of that, the zombie crashed right into him.

It sent both crashing into the water, the filthy water that Jason was avoiding, he was submerged in it from head to toe.

He didn’t stay long there; however, Jason’s head popped out of the water, vomiting in the process.

"Chronos, you fucking owe me for this!" Jason exclaimed, he was covered in the most vile thing known to man.

The zombie, however, didn’t resurface. Jason had to dig his hand into the water to grab it.

He took out the zombie of the water and didn’t hesitate to bury multiple bullets in its head.

[Ding!]

[Quest complete!]

[Reward: 100 EXP!]

Chronos alerted Jason the moment his hand reached into the zombie’s chest, he had yanked out the fragment that Chronos so desperately sought.

Zombies had no digestive system so the fragment was simply a part of it until now, and Jason could only wonder how many more zombies had gotten their hand on the fragment and worse yet, for how long.

He could defeat this one because the zombie hadn’t been merged with it for all that long so its entire evolution was reliant on that fragment.

"Man, this is the last time I will accept a fucking quest from you!" Jason cussed but he couldn’t catch his breath or so he thought.

Jason was in the middle of his worst nightmare, the gunshots had managed to wake up the idle nest of zombies and with it, the horde was active.
