Chapter 210: Not Aamon.
Chapter 210: Not Aamon.
Ezra and Kaelis moved almost perfectly in sync as they followed the direction of Aurien’s voice, their footsteps quieter now as instinct immediately took over.
The closer they got, the clearer Aurien sounded.
And he sounded panicked.
Not nervous.
Not anxious.
Panicked.
’This isn’t looking good for Aurien,’ Ezra thought with a small frown forming on his face.
Besides Kaelis, Ezra could never fully form a single opinion on Aurien.
For one, Aurien used to be a coward, or at least that was how everyone saw him, and before, Ezra had thought the same. Back then, it annoyed him, especially compared to Helios and Kaeli,s who carried themselves like actual princes of war.
But now?
Now it didn’t seem like such a big flaw anymore.
And during the training a week ago, Aurien had shown a massive change.
He was still kind. Still soft-spoken. Still, the sweet prince everyone adored.
But beneath that sweetness, Ezra saw confidence now.
Danger too.
People feared Aurien more lately.
And they feared him openly.
And now?
Aurien sounded scared, but at the same time suspicious.
"Why aren’t you saying anything?" Aurien’s voice came out strained now, lower like he was trying not to be overheard. "Please say something, I don’t know what we should do–"
Ezra immediately slows slightly near the corner of the hall, Kaelis doing the same beside him without needing to be told.
Then another voice spoke.
A familiar one that made Ezra’s eyes widen instantly.
"Your Highness, calm down. His Majesty doesn’t suspect a thing–"
Ezra froze.
It was Aamon.
For a second, Ezra genuinely thought he had heard wrong.
But no.
That was Aamon’s voice.
Calm. Steady. Familiar in a way that made Ezra’s chest tighten painfully.
’No...No...’ Ezra thought frantically, trying to calm himself before he reacted too quickly, though his heart was already beating hard enough to hurt.
Then Aurien whisper-exclaims again, sounding even more frantic now.
"That’s not the point. They’re making that kind of connection, I didn’t even think..."
Aurien’s voice trails off into quiet babbling after that, too rushed to fully make out, but Ezra barely hears any of it anymore.
Because his mind was stuck on something else entirely.
Aamon.
’This must be a joke...’
Ezra’s heartbeat suddenly feels too loud in his ears.
Not Aamon.
Anyone but him.
And somehow, what made it worse was that Kaelis didn’t seem surprised to hear Aurien and Aamon talking privately like this.
Kaelis looked tense, yes. Focused too.
But not shocked.
Like part of him already expected this possibility.
Ezra’s stomach twists painfully.
Because Aamon wasn’t just some knight to him.
Aamon raised him.
As much as Ezra liked denying it sometimes, the truth was that Aamon had always been the closest thing he ever had to a father.
Aamon taught him how to hold a sword properly.
How to survive his first patrol.
How to clean wounds without panicking.
Aamon was the one who stayed beside his bed when Ezra nearly died from fever as a teenager because he kept insisting he was "fine" until he collapsed.
Aamon was the one who quietly left food outside Ezra’s room during difficult times when Ezra was younger and too ashamed to face anyone.
He remembered small things, too.
Aamon awkwardly teaches Ezra about being a man.
Aamon stood behind him during knight ceremonies with that same unreadable expression he always had.
A rough hand briefly patting his shoulder whenever Ezra succeeded at something important.
Helios, he could still wrap his head around being evil.
It hurt horribly, but Ezra could force himself to understand it somehow.
Helios was always complicated.
Always hard to fully read.
Even when Ezra loved him, there had always been something distant about him, something Ezra kept trying to reach but never fully could.
But Aamon?
Aamon was steady.
Safe.
Aamon was the person Ezra ran to whenever he was injured as a child because he knew Aamon would quietly fix it without judgment.
The person who carried him back to his room after exhausting training.
The person who scolded him for skipping meals.
The person who once told him, very awkwardly, that he didn’t have to prove himself worthy all the time.
And now, suddenly hearing him speak like this, hidden in a corridor with Aurien, talking about suspicion and connections—
It felt like the floor beneath Ezra was cracking apart.
Beside him, Kaelis subtly glanced at him again, immediately noticing how pale Ezra had gotten.
Ezra hated that Kaelis could read him so easily lately.
His throat felt painfully tight now.
’Please let there be another explanation.’
Because Ezra genuinely didn’t know if his heart could handle another betrayal from someone he loved.
Ezra’s throat tightens painfully as he stares toward the corner of the hall, almost afraid to move closer now.
Beside him, Kaelis glances at him briefly, immediately noticing the shift in Ezra’s expression.
And for the first time since they started following the voices, Kaelis hesitates.
Because Ezra looked devastated already, and they hadn’t even seen them yet.
"Ezra..." Kaelis whispers quietly, his voice lower now, almost careful.
Ezra shakes his head immediately before Kaelis could say anything else.
A small movement.
But enough.
’I need to hear this myself.’
Because part of him still desperately wanted there to be another explanation.
Anything else.
Anything that didn’t involve Aamon being part of this, too.
"Even if my father doesn’t suspect a thing, it doesn’t mean my brother doesn’t either...earlier, I swore he was following me." Aurien says, making Ezra’s eyes widen even more as he immediately glances at Kaelis again.
Kaelis looked...disappointed with himself.
Not confused.
Not surprised.
Disappointed.
Like Aurien confirming it only proved Kaelis’ suspicions right.
"It doesn’t matter. Right now, everyone is a suspect, Your Highness." Aamon says calmly. "What matters is they don’t know yet. Prince Kaelis doesn’t know yet, and we have to keep it that way."
Ezra’s stomach drops.
This wasn’t sounding good.
Not at all.
Every word only made the knot in his chest tighten further, his thoughts spiraling painfully now.
Because this didn’t sound like innocent secrecy anymore.
This sounded planned.
Deliberate.
And hearing Aamon speak so calmly about hiding things from Kaelis made Ezra feel sick in a way he couldn’t explain.
’Why would Aamon hide something from him...?’
From the investigation.
Unless whatever it was could tip Kaelis about a scheme they were planning.
Or expose something bigger.
"Let us go to your palace, let’s talk there in case Prince Kaelis comes back," Aamon says again, practical and composed like always.
Ezra hears Aurien let out a shaky sigh after that.
"Yes, let’s go."
Then footsteps.
Moving closer.
Ezra instinctively presses himself slightly back toward the wall beside Kaelis, his pulse quickening again.
"Should we follow them?" Ezra whispers very quietly toward Kaelis, careful not to let his voice carry.
Kaelis’s brows furrow faintly.
"I’m not sure, there’s a chance they’re both–"
"Now, this is an odd sight to see."
Both Kaelis and Ezra stiffened instantly as another voice suddenly joined them from behind.
Ezra even more so.
Because it was a voice he absolutely did not want to hear right now.
’Fuck.’ Ezra thought immediately, dread crashing into him all over again.
Slowly, both he and Kaelis turned around.
And standing there, looking at the two of them with a calm smile that immediately made Ezra’s chest tighten, was Helios.
Of course, it was Helios.
Ezra almost wanted to laugh bitterly at how horrible his timing always was.
Helios’ gaze flickers briefly between the two of them, sharp enough that Ezra immediately wonders how much he saw.
Or worse.
How much he heard.
"Well," Helios says lightly, though there was something unreadable beneath his tone now. "You both look awfully tense."
Ezra’s body immediately goes rigid.
Because suddenly, being caught listening to Aurien and Aamon wasn’t even the thing making him nervous anymore.
It was Helios standing right in front of him while everything inside Ezra was still unraveling.
"What are you two doing here?" Helios asks, tilting his head slightly. "Why aren’t you answering?"
Ezra blinks once, forcing himself back to reality.
He could tell Helios was angry.
Even with that smile.
That same soft smile Ezra used to love looking at for years, the same one that used to calm him instantly,y no matter how exhausted he was.
Now it unnerved him.
Because now Ezra noticed things he hadn’t before.
The tightness around Helios’ eyes.
How still he became whenever he was upset.
How his voice stayed gentle even when something darker sat beneath it.
’How did I never notice before...?’
But they had to answer.
One of them, at least.
And since Kaelis wasn’t speaking, Ezra opened his mouth first.
"We–"
"We were having a little romantic rendezvous, Brother."
Ezra’s brain immediately stopped working.
Because suddenly Kaelis grabbed his wrist and pulled him closer without warning, the movement was smooth and natural enough that Ezra barely had time to react before he stumbled directly into Kaelis’ chest.
Warm arms immediately settled around him.
Secure.
Close.
Way too close.
Ezra barely even registered what was happening anymore.
One minute, he was devastated because of Aamon.
Then surprised because of Helios suddenly appeared behind them.
And now—
Now he was flustered because he was somehow inside Kaelis’ arms again.
’What...’
...was actually happening right now?
