Chapter 557 - 549: Putting on a Show
Gu Yifeng also didn’t fall asleep. How could he know that Sister Ning had found out the child was fake? His heart was still occupied with thoughts about Brother Zong. Regardless of his jealousy, he understood that was his child.
Even though he hadn’t slept in days and now Sister Ning was awake, he didn’t feel sleepy at all. When he sensed the breathing of the little one in his arms had steadied, Gu Yifeng slowly opened his eyes.
Her face, slightly plump from pregnancy, had slimmed down in just a few days. Although she was sleeping, her brows were tightly furrowed. Gu Yifeng couldn’t help but raise his hand to smooth her brow as her distinctive black and white eyes opened.
Gu Yifeng paused and then smiled, "Why aren’t you asleep?"
"I’ve slept for three days. I had wanted to sleep after eating but once I lay down, I just couldn’t sleep. Aren’t you tired, big brother? You probably haven’t rested because of me, right? Look, even your stubble is showing." Lin Youning raised her hand to touch her big brother’s chin, "I’ve never seen you looking so scruffy. This is with just one child. I wonder how you’ll look when I have more."
Gu Yifeng laughed at her teasing, "What does it matter? As I age and you stay young, I’ll become an old man. Will you dislike me even more then?"
Lin Youning couldn’t help but giggle, while Hailan and Shanmoi standing outside breathed a sigh of relief.
The young lady has awakened, easing their hearts. Hearing her so spirited now reassured them further. If she’s okay, everything else will be fine, especially the matters concerning Prince Xian Mansion should also be resolved.
All matters aside, the young lady was comatose these past days. The Marquis stayed by her side, even locating the little master himself. Not to mention the matter of Prince Xian coming to the mansion to make a scene.
Though each time Prince Xian made a fuss, it ended without resolution, the rumors have spread in the Capital, accusing them of abuse of power. Sister Yue went to the Second Mansion, but her affairs remain unattended.
The Second Master and Young Master De are in the mansion, as is Mrs. Kong. The Duke Mansion is occupied with its own mourning and they certainly won’t address this side.
Seeing all matters accumulating, previously it felt as though the young lady couldn’t handle anything, but with her incident, chaos ensued.
Sister Ning woke in the middle of the night, hence slept late and awoke near noon the next day. Upon opening her eyes, she saw her brothers, father, and maternal grandfather’s family, which made Lin Youning’s head ache, yet warmth filled her heart til her nose tinged.
"Father," she called softly, and tears immediately flowed.
Prince Shou, usually a cool figure, felt his eyes redden at her call, "It’s good you’re awake. Now that Brother Zong is found, live well afterward."
Lin Youning didn’t know if this was a stand-in found by her big brother, or whether everyone was aware. Hearing her father say this tightened her heart. She nodded vigorously, "Let father and grandfather not worry; it’s my filiation that’s unworthy."
Mrs. Liu Sr. sat by the bed, gripping her granddaughter’s hand tightly, "It’s unworthy for you to learn your mother’s unfilial ways. Are you planning to leave us, having us send off a young one with white hair? Do you intend to follow your mother? Whenever I think of her my heart aches. As a mother, she should have persevered, yet she drowned herself in sorrow, leaving you all without a mother now."
Before Mrs. Liu Sr. finished speaking, she bent over sobbing.
"There, the child is fine now. Don’t worry, I think Sister Ning is stronger than her mother, even if the sky should fall, Sister Ning would stand firm." Chancellor Liu said with hidden meanings.
Lin Youning smiled and nodded, "Grandfather is right. I’m okay; grandmother, rest assured, I will be strong, now that I am a mother myself."
Perhaps knowing this person found isn’t Brother Zong, Lin Youning sensed hidden lessons in her grandfather’s words. Everyone feels sorrow over Brother Zong’s loss, yet they’re comforting her here, having done so much for her, how could she wallow in sadness?
Chancellor Liu was relieved for his granddaughter, but being a man within the lady’s chambers wasn’t proper. They spoke a little longer before leaving with Gu Yifeng, leaving Liang Hui and Mrs. Liu Sr. behind.
"You nearly scared us to death." Liang Hui wore a smile, "Grandmother worried endlessly these days, barely closing her eyes. Good thing you woke up timely, you saved us some angst."
"My old bones can still endure a bit. Now that Sister Ning is fine, I’m placated." Mrs. Liu Sr. was indifferent.
Lin Youning snuggled against her grandmother, "Grandmother loves me most."
Mrs. Liu Sr. playfully pressed her nose, "You woke up; I have matters to discuss with you. Not concerning other issues, just how to handle Mrs. Kong and Second Master Gu’s father-son duo in your mansion?"
Lin Youning smiled faintly, "I won’t interfere with this matter. Let big brother handle it; he is always more considerate than I am."
Mrs. Liu Sr. furrowed her brows, "He is indeed more thoughtful, but his measures are often harsh."
Liang Hui noticed Sister Ning was resolved this time and worried seeing Mrs. Liu Sr. persuading her.
Lin Youning’s lips curled up, "Don’t worry grandmother, if I were to handle the matter, I’d kill them directly. They harmed newborn Brother Zong and don’t deserve pity. Are they even worthy?"
Seeing this, Mrs. Liu Sr. knew Sister Ning was genuinely angry, "Enough, enough, you’ve always been soft-hearted, but it’s rare to see you angry. I won’t interfere. As you said, their hearts were vicious, and now that matters are resolved, we should stand firm. Otherwise, who knows what they might do later?"
Lin Youning smiled.
Liang Hui sighed in relief beside her, smiling, "Since things are good now, let’s not mention them, it only ruins our mood."
"Right, this works well," Lin Youning echoed with a smile.
Seeing neither grandmother nor sister-in-law mentioning Brother Zong confirmed everyone’s knowledge. Lin Youning didn’t deliberately bring up Brother Zong, aware that discussing him now would only dampen spirits.
Confined to her postpartum confinement, Lin Youning couldn’t sit long, so after chatting briefly, she lay down again. At lunch Mrs. Liu Sr. and others accompanied Sister Ning to have some porridge. Mrs. Liu Sr. hadn’t returned to her mansion in days, with Sister Ning recovered, she now proposed returning.
Lin Youning understood, "Grandmother, you go back; I’m fine here. If anything arises, I’ll have someone send word to your mansion."
