Chapter 44 Circuit Breaker
Chapter 44 Circuit Breaker
Seeing Mu Jie's arrogant attitude, Zhang Shengyong was furious and couldn't help but swear.
Wei Hongbo patted him on the shoulder: "It's good that someone has shown up."
Zhang Shengyong asked, "When will you arrest them?"
"No rush," Wei Hongbo said thoughtfully. "We need to seize the initiative."
In his experience, the best time to interrogate a suspect is right after he is arrested, because the surprise can elicit a lot of useful clues.
After being arrested and taken to the police station, suspects have had ample time to prepare themselves mentally. They often develop a sense of侥幸心理 (a gambler's mentality), believing that the police may not know certain things. When confessing, they tend to conceal information, hoping to escape or have their sentences reduced.
Therefore, Wei Hongbo planned to contact the experts introduced by his younger brother first to gain more relevant knowledge and information before carrying out the arrest.
"Okay, I'll keep an eye on him," Zhang Shengyong said through gritted teeth. If Mu Jie were to disappear again, he'd be fired.
"Take a break when you need to, and everyone take turns keeping an eye on him," Wei Hongbo said, looking at the big screen. "Judging from his appearance, he probably doesn't plan to run away, at least not right now."
Zhang Shengyong nodded and immediately arranged for personnel to monitor Mu Jie's apartment in advance. Based on the drawn map of Mu Jie's daily movements, targeted deployments were made at various locations and along the route.
Because this case was handled at a higher level, there were abundant resources available. With sufficient preparation, it was relatively easy to keep an eye on one person.
At this point, some people began to feel fortunate that Wei Hongbo had firmly rejected the suggestion to search Mu Jie's apartment and properties; otherwise, this guy certainly wouldn't have shown his face.
Wei Hongbo handed over the matter to Zhang Shengyong, went out and called Feng Xiaoxu. He learned that Feng was free in the afternoon, so they arranged to meet.
He ate something and slept for three hours in his dormitory. After getting up, he went to the command center to find out what was going on. He learned that Mu Jie had no abnormal reactions and was currently having tea with some friends at the music store, so he was relieved.
……
……
Wei Hongbo and Feng Xiaoxu agreed to meet at the old campus of Yuecheng University, which wasn't far from the branch office; they arrived in about twenty minutes. Feng Xiaoxu had registered the license plate number in advance, allowing them to drive directly onto the campus.
Following the navigation, Wei Hongbo parked his car in a parking space in front of a building. As soon as he got out of the car, he saw a man of medium build wearing frameless glasses coming towards him. His appearance was vaguely familiar.
"Officer Wei, hello." Feng Xiaoxu greeted him with a smile.
"Hello, Dr. Feng," Wei Hongbo said with a smile, shaking hands with the other party.
"I haven't graduated yet, so I don't deserve that title. Right now, I'm a master's student, just like Hongsi. Oh, by the way, Hongsi hasn't received his diploma yet; he's still a bachelor's student, haha!" Feng Xiaoxu said as he led Wei Hongbo into the building.
Wei Hongbo smiled obligingly, but there was still a slight feeling of being offended.
Feng Xiaoxu was a doctoral student and also a teaching assistant. Because he worked with Professor Zhou, he had a private office. He led Wei Hongbo to his office and served him a freshly brewed cup of tea.
"I'm here today because I've encountered some problems with a case and need to consult you," Wei Hongbo said, sitting down and getting straight to the point. Since the other party didn't refer to himself as a doctor, he simply addressed him as "you" and "me," since he was older and it wasn't considered impolite.
"Yes, I heard the reason from Hongsi." Feng Xiaoxu's expression immediately became serious. "I can guarantee that I will not disclose any content related to the case that we discussed today to any third party."
"Thanks!"
Wei Hongbo didn't intend to have the other party swear an oath or sign any confidentiality agreement. Partly, he trusted the character of the person his younger brother had recommended, and partly, he didn't plan to discuss too much related to the case. However, Feng Xiaoxu's methodical personality made him a suitable consultant.
He took an object wrapped in layers of cotton cloth from his bag, placed it on the table, and unwrapped it to reveal a transparent box about half the size of a cigarette pack. At the bottom center of the box, there was a ring of soft material feet securing a small cylindrical container.
Upon seeing this, Feng Xiaoxu immediately became interested, picked up a magnifying glass from the table, and began to examine the container.
The cylindrical container in the box is a sample vial, which should be made of ultra-high purity quartz glass. This chemically inert material releases almost no ions and does not adsorb or react with carbon nanomaterials.
The threaded sealing caps on the sample vials have gaskets, which are likely made of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), effectively preventing air and moisture from entering.
At the bottom of the sample vial, there are some very tiny crystals that are difficult to see with the naked eye unless they are clustered together and cause a slight refraction of light.
Wei Hongbo said, "This was extracted from the deceased's skull. According to the analysis of the identification center, it is a substance similar to carbon nanotubes."
Feng Xiaoxu nodded slightly, and after a while, he put down the magnifying glass, straightened up, and exclaimed, "I really admire you guys; you can even find such small pieces of evidence."
"This is all thanks to the provincial appraisal center." Wei Hongbo dared not take credit for it.
Wei Hongsi had previously emphasized to him how tiny those things were and how carefully they needed to be searched. Actually, he didn't have a concept of it at the time; he had seen quite a few tiny pieces of evidence in his criminal investigation work. It wasn't until he went to the identification center to retrieve this sample bottle that he truly understood what "imperceptible" meant.
"We can conduct further analysis on these materials, which will take some time. However, I've done some research beforehand and compiled some information, which I hope will be helpful to Officer Wei."
"Speaking."
"As far as I know, carbon nanotube materials used in brain-computer interfaces have existed for twenty years and have already been put into practical use. Although they are far less sophisticated than the samples you brought, the technical approach is the same."
Feng Xiaoxu led Wei Hongbo to another desk with a computer, tapped the keyboard, and the monitor on the desk lit up.
He opened a folder and clicked on one of the pictures, which showed a fighter jet crashing. Wei Hongbo recognized it as a fighter jet from a certain northern power, and the paint scheme on the jet belonged to a North African country.
"Twenty years ago, this country experienced three consecutive fighter jet crashes during a non-combat period, which attracted widespread attention. The country of origin of the fighter jets intervened in the investigation, but it came to nothing."
"Later, some related files were leaked through special channels. According to the contents of those files, in order to quickly train pilots, the leader of that North African country used an invasive brain-computer interface to implant aircraft control skills into soldiers. Because the implanted personnel had a high rate of mental breakdown and would forget the skills after a period of time, a series of plane crashes occurred."
"This technology was then called the 'microelectrode array synchronous modulation infusion system,' and it had two origins, one of which was the predecessor of a certain northern power."
