Chapter 370 - 370: Poisoned
The flickering candlelight cast long shadows across the room, illuminating Angelina's face as she gazed out the window. Her eyes, usually sharp and alert, now seemed distant, lost in the mists of memory.
Jaegar watched her intently, sensing the weight of untold stories in the air between them.
"The Spire took me in," Angelina began, her voice barely above a whisper. She turned to face Jaegar, her grandson, the living bridge between her past and present. "But as a member, we weren't supposed to have families. So I lied about my husband and child."
Jaegar leaned forward; his curiosity piqued. It was a side he never knew about his master. h
"I thought it was necessary to protect them," Angelina continued, her voice gaining strength. "I changed my name to my mother's maiden name and immersed myself in the study of magic. I wanted to grow stronger, to rise through the ranks. I hoped that one day, I would be powerful enough to protect my daughter."
She paused, a shadow of regret crossing her face. "Many years passed. Then one day, I saw Augusta."
Jaegar's breath caught in his throat. His mother's name hung in the air, charged with emotion.
"She had come
"Even you can't do anything to him?" he asked, incredulous.
"I can't act on irrational thoughts alone," Angelina replied, frustration evident in her tone. "He is a prince, and I had my position as the Matriarch to consider. I couldn't act recklessly."
"Even if I am stronger than anyone else, I couldn't do anything to him. After all, he is from the imperial family. You still have to learn about the capability and dominance of the imperial family."
Jaegar's fists clenched at his sides. "Don't worry, mas—" He clicked his tongue, frustrated with the slip. He had been used to calling her master. "I will find him and get the answers from him," he declared, his eyes blazing with foolish determination. Jaegar's mind was all over the place as he learnt a lot about his mother and his family's past. His anger overshadowed his rational thinking.
"Are you stupid?" a voice cut through the tension.
Jaegar turned to see Yasmine entering the room, her face a mask of concern and irritation. She approached Angelina and said, "Don't act recklessly and cause more trouble for her."
"But—" Jaegar tried to interject, but Yasmine cut him off.
"Do you know why they are so angry at you? If she hadn't come, they would have actually killed you," Yasmine said, her voice sharp with barely contained anger.
She was referring to the women of the council. They had been so angry with Jaegar and he still doesn't know the exact reason.
Angelina tried to stop her, but Yasmine pressed on, revealing a shocking truth: "She was poisoned, by going after the ones who came for you."
Jaegar's world seemed to tilt on its axis as Yasmine explained further. "Bande de Serpents, they've been after you for years, haven't they? They had come looking for you, and that's when she encountered them and fought them.
She battled two of them and was poisoned in the process. No one knows about this right now, except for us three. And it shall remain so."
The weight of this revelation crashed down on Jaegar. Jaegar sat back on the bed, processing the information dump.
'What in the actual fucking life is this? Trouble seems to keep coming after me,'
Jaegar thought to himself.
