Chapter 44 Progress 1. Whispers of Smoke
A month and some weeks or so had passed since Trevor's awakening, and his life had transformed into a maelstrom of discovery. His white hair, once a symbol of his noble heritage, now seemed to shimmer with an otherworldly energy, as if infused with the essence of Smoke. His red eyes gleamed like hot coals, burning with an inner fire that threatened to consume him whole.
Within the secluded courtyard of his estate, Trevor stood before the Death Skull, his spirit beast. The crystalline skull pulsed with a gentle, ethereal glow, its red sockets watching him with an unblinking gaze. Smoke swirled around the skull, tendrils curling like tentative fingers.
"Today, I will grasp the whispers of Smoke," Trevor declared, his voice low and determined.
As a Novice mage, Trevor's control over Smoke was still fledgling. He could summon small amounts, manipulate its density, and sense the element's presence. Yet, he yearned for more – to wield Smoke with precision, to bend it to his will.
With a deep breath, Trevor focused on the sensation within. Smoke began to seep from his fingertips, tendrils lengthening as he poured his energy into the element. The Death Skull's glow intensified, its presence amplifying Trevor's connection to Smoke.
The courtyard was serene, a haven away from the chaos of the outside world. Tall, ancient trees bordered the area, their leaves rustling softly in the wind. Marble statues of legendary warriors and mythical creatures stood sentinel, their eyes forever fixed on some distant point. A small pond with crystal-clear water reflected the sky, its surface disturbed only by the occasional ripple from a darting fish. The air was thick with the scent of blooming flowers and the earthy aroma of the surrounding forest.
The sky turned a deep orange, the sun dipping below the horizon, when Trevor decided to attempt something more complex. He envisioned a barrier, not just a simple shield, but a dome of Smoke that could protect him from all sides. He spread his arms wide, feeling the energy flow through him, and summoned the Smoke. It responded eagerly, swirling around him in a chaotic dance before settling into the shape he desired on the condition of his energy depleting rapidly. He was already low on energy, but he still pushed on, refusing to be left behind by his peers. The dome formed, shimmering with an inner light, and Trevor stood within it, marveling at his creation.
"Well done," the whisper echoed again, and Trevor felt a surge of pride. The Death Skull's glow pulsed in response, a promise of the wonders that awaited Trevor on his journey.
The following days were a blur of practice and meditation. Trevor isolated himself from the world, dedicating every waking moment to his training. He honed his skills, learning to manipulate the Smoke with greater precision. He could now form some crude weapon mimics of smoke, daggers, and swords that shimmered with an ethereal light. His combat techniques improved as well, the Smoke enhancing his speed and strength.
One evening, as the moon cast its silvery light over the courtyard, Trevor decided to test his limits. He had read about the power of Smoke to create illusions, to deceive the senses. It was a skill that required immense concentration and control, and he was determined to master it.
He focused, drawing the Smoke around him, and pictured his first pet. The face of the small puppy appeared before him, a ghostly image that flickered and wavered. Tears filled his eyes as he reached out to touch it, but his hand passed through the Smoke. The illusion was fragile, but it was a start.
Days passed, and Trevor's progress was undeniable. He could now control the Smoke with a more refined control, and he was just a step away from his breakthrough. He was so close that he felt he could just sleep and breakthrough, but it seemed that something was missing. The Death Skull's presence was a constant reminder of his journey, its glow a beacon of his progress and he was determined to fill that void and rank up to the next level.
For now, he exited his closed training and prepared to head to his flat in the city, close to the academy.
