Chapter 1187: In the City
Chapter 1187: In the City
"Grandpa, I’ll call my aunt.""Alright, Meng Lin, you are an adult now, starting your own family. Make sure to live well." Mr. Tao said somewhat emotionally, as this child grew up beside him and now belongs to someone else.
Wang Menglin’s eyes reddened, and she nodded heavily, as if the person on the other end could see her.
"Grandpa, don’t worry, I will definitely live well."
"Good, Grandpa believes in you, believes that my Meng Lin can definitely live happily."
Li Manjiang patted Wang Menglin on the shoulder, understanding her homesickness. He planned to apply for leave in advance and see if he could take her back for a visit.
Wang Menglin was reluctant to hang up the phone until Mr. Tao spoke, "Meng Lin, call your aunt; she’s at work now."
She dialed Mrs. Tao’s number, "Meng Lin, be a good girl, don’t worry. If someone dares to bully you, your aunt has your back.
Meng Lin, girls in our family are precious. I won’t let you suffer any injustice, but you must be upright, filial to elders, and protective of your siblings. If I find out you’re not obedient, I’ll discipline you."
"Aunt, I’ll be obedient, I promise."
"Good, I believe you. Our Meng Lin has always been a good child."
The two of them were both a bit choked up. When Wang Menglin first learned to speak, she called Mrs. Tao ’mom,’ and Grandma Tao once cried over how hard her life was.
"Meng Lin, don’t bother calling your uncle. He’s gone to the barracks and I don’t know where. I’ll tell him later."
"Okay, Aunt. You, Uncle, and Grandpa must take good care of yourselves. The three of us here are doing well; the work isn’t hard, we can manage, and we have everything we need."
"Good, we will take care of ourselves. Meng Lin, tell Xiao Zhen about the Yang family affair in the Capital. Your uncle disagrees, but he hasn’t openly discussed it.
You’ve met Yang Zhongyi from the Yang family, right? What do you think?"
"Aunt, Yang Zhongyi is okay, but my cousin said his eyes show resistance, perhaps he is unwilling too."
It’s important to inform the family about Yang Zhongyi’s attitude, a consideration for the future.
"Okay, I understand."
Mrs. Tao gave Meng Lin a few more words of advice before they ended the call.
Li Manjiang didn’t interrupt her, and Wang Menglin took a moment to calm down, feeling much better.
"Let’s go out."
"Uncle Jin, we’re going to the city."
"Alright, we’ll go early tomorrow."
By the time they arrived in the city, it was already past twelve.
Back home, Li Yunqiao waited for them to have lunch.
"Dad, are you not going to work this afternoon?"
"No, I’ve taken leave. Your elder brother will return early from work too.
Let’s have lunch first, then go around the building and the supply and marketing cooperative to check what’s missing."
Lu Fengzhen pulled Wang Menglin to sit. Lunch at home today was rice, braised chicken, and steamed egg custard.
There were also shredded potatoes and cabbage stewed with tofu. The meal was quite good.
"Dad, Aunt Lu, can the younger brother go?"
"I don’t want to take him; your Aunt didn’t go, so let him stay home. It’s too cold early and late." Li Yunqiao had already discussed with Lu Fengzhen; they planned to go tonight and return tomorrow afternoon.
"Dad, taking the younger brother is possible too. Tomorrow, our brother-in-law will definitely drive you back, and it won’t be cold."
"He’s too small, and tomorrow the house will be chaotic with the need to care for him; better to let him stay home." Lu Fengzhen said with a smile.
"Is Zhibin going?"
"Zhibin is at his grandma’s. He’s not coming either."
"I thought so; I figured he was asleep."
After the family finished lunch, they sat down to drink some water.
"Manjiang, is everything prepared at home?"
"Everything is ready; nothing is missing."
"Zhibin and his wife bought you a thermos, your aunt bought pillow covers, towels, and two pieces of fabric.
Wang Zhiqing, is there anything else you think we need?"
"Uncle, really, nothing is missing; everything is perfect."
In the afternoon, Li Yunqiao took the three of them to the building, carrying bottles from home to buy soy sauce and vinegar.
He bought the most sugar cubes, and dozens of sheets of red paper and candles.
Li Manjiang wanted to buy two sets of clothes for his wife but was refused. "I have plenty of clothes. Buying more would be wasteful. Let’s wait and see if new styles appear later."
Li Manjiang felt that his wife didn’t need him to support her.
Finally, Lu Fengzhen persuaded Wang Menglin, and she bought a pair of leather shoes.
"Meng Lin, haven’t you two taken photos yet?"
Upon hearing this, Li Yunqiao realized he hadn’t taken photos with his own wife either.
"Let’s go, we’ll all go together; your aunt and I will take photos today too."
Li Manjiang had long planned this, intending to take photos before leaving.
The five of them stopped wandering, "You go to the photo studio, I’ll first take these home." Red Army didn’t want to wait there, preferring to return home.
"Can you manage it alone?"
"I’m not strong in other ways, but my arms are well-trained."
Lu Fengzhen glanced through the tickets in her hand. "Luckily, I brought all the tickets; otherwise, I’d have to go back home to fetch them."
The four of them went to the photo studio and handed over the tickets. They checked the young couple’s marriage certificate, while Li Yunqiao and his wife’s certificates weren’t required.
They paid and received a receipt. Li Yunqiao got excited and took many more photos, "When we come back, we’ll bring Zhibin and Dapeng for photos too."
A week later, they came back to pick up the photos while Li Manjiang was still there. He took the ticket himself, planning to take his wife around the city.
No more time should be wasted. "Let’s go to the grain depot again and bring back some fine grains."
"Uncle, Captain Jin of the transport team found fifty pounds of rice for us; we have our own white flour. We don’t need to buy grains."
Uncle’s family lived in the city where fine grain supply was limited, making it unrealistic to buy more.
Li Yunqiao didn’t say much as the grain supply at their hometown was indeed better.
The four returned home. Lu Fengzhen hurried to feed Dapeng, who was well-behaved; he wouldn’t cry loudly even when hungry.
Wang Wugu had already prepared dinner. Rice porridge, salted eggs, steamed flower rolls, and pickles steamed with scallions and lard.
Li Honglin and his wife hurriedly returned, knowing they would go back to the hometown tonight, so they visited their parents earlier and arranged for Zhibin.
After dinner, the couple each carried two thermoses as they climbed onto the tractor.
Red Army was a bit excited to use a tractor to transport Dad and elder brother for the first time.
Li Yunqiao had the same feeling, watching his son’s silhouette; he was no longer the boy he used to be, now he had grown up.
